Profile

The Government Arts College was started in 14.6.1965 under the name of Government Arts College, Ariyalur. The district collector of composite Trichirappalli Mr.T.K.Chokkalingam IAS, was the Chairman and Thiru,S. Varatharajan, BA., BL., was appointed as Secretary of the College at the time.

The college offered Pre University courses initially which was started in the year  14.06.1965 in the Government high school, Ariyalur. A Degree course in Economics was started in the year of 1966-67. Then the college was shifted to a new building which was opened by Honorable Chief Minister M.Pakthavachalam BA.,BL.,  in the presence of Thiru K.Chokkalingam IAS,then the  District Collector of Trichirappalli.

The Department was initiated in 1966-67, with Under Graduate programme , and 130 students  are admitted every year. In the year of 2003-2004, Post Graduate programme  was introduced as a self financing course. In 2006-2007 the self financing course was changed as Government aided course. Since 2006-07 students were instigated and 35 students are permitted for the admission in PG Degree course. Research Progrmme (M.Phil) was initiated in the academic year 2017-18, where in nine scholars were involved in research programme.

In the first set of M,Phil research programme all students were awarded M.Phil Degree in the department. Every year 3 to 4 students are awarded with all over rank holders in Bharathidasan University. Previous year (2018-19) three PG students are awarded with the rank holder of Bharathidasan University.

The Department has produced so many eminent professionals who occupy excellent Government positions. In the last year itself, two students are appointed as PG teachers in Government Higher Secondary Schools.

The Department has 10 faculty members who renders effective teaching and engage themselves in research activities.
