Government Arts College, Ariyalur, a Pioneering Government College Which was established inthe year 1965, owing to the development and awareness in the field of Higher Education. Inorder to cater to the needs of rural people in and around the small town Ariyalur and to enhancethe growth of primary and middle level education in Tamilnadu, this College was establishesunder the able administration and principal Prof.Y.P Ramachandran. This College was officiallyinaugurated by Thiru.M.Bhakthavathchalam, the then Chief minister of Tamilnadu.The Department of Tamil started offering B.A Tamil Literature as a core course in theyear 1980 – 81. In continuation of this M.A. Tamil Literature was offered under self- financingcourse mode during the academic year 2003- 2004 and then it was transformed to GeneralDivision from the Academic year 2006 – 2007. With the great concern for the development ofthe students and with the interest in the field of research, M.phil., in Tamil was introduced in2011 – 2012. The department has been excelling in the field of research till date with theDoctoral Degree course in the year 2011 – 2012.

Focusing on the growth of economically backward students shift – II was established inthe academic year 2008-2009 which has been functioning successfully ever since it was started.It does proud to mention that the department was begun with 20 students initially buttoday the department is strong enough with 150 students at UG level, 78 students at PG level, 16students at M.Phil and 48 students are pursuing their Ph.D. course.

The department aims not only in imparting Tamil Literature as a subject but also providingvarious training programmes to improve their skills. The Alumni of this department serving invarious Government services in India and also working abroad is the highlight of thisdepartment.
